Attention: Fluor Wax Ban at MWC 2024
15 December 2023 On July 1, 2023, the FIS, the International Ski Federation, decided to ban the use of fluorinated ski waxes at all FIS cross-country skiing competitions from the 2023/24 season.
This ban also applies to the 2024 Masters World Cup in Vuokatti/Finland as well as 2023/24 World Loppet events.
Both skating and classic skis have to be completely fluorine-free to adhere to the intent of the new FIS rule. Participants are advised to clean their skis thoroughly of old traces of fluor wax before preparation. Please visit the FIS "Cleaning methods" link.
Carrying out control measurements:
Neither the Vuokatti OC nor the WMA knows whether the FIS will send an expert with test equipment to Vuokatti. If control measurements are taken, a FIS-certified measurement expert and an official test device will carry these out.
Checks before and after the competitions:
Checks can take place both before the start and after the finish. The new test devices reportedly can be used to quickly determine whether the wax contains traces of fluorine. If the test result before the start shows traces of fluorine that exceed the limit value, the participant will be excluded from the start. If traces of fluorine exceeding the limit value are detected after the race, the participant will be disqualified.
WMA appeals to our participants to adhere to the new FIS rule, not only because of the potential for testing, but also for reasons of fairness towards the other athletes
